Health & Development of Women & Children

Junior League of Lafayette is committed to improving the health and well-being of women, children, and families through signature programs that meet essential needs with compassion and care.
Under the Health Essentials Resource (HER) Committee, the Diaper Bank (2019) and EmpowHER. (2022) address two critical areas of need in Acadiana — diaper access and period poverty. The Happy Wheels Hospitality Cart (2023) brings comfort to hospital patients and families by offering essentials like snacks, toiletries, and activities. The SMILES Program (2003), in partnership with Miles Perret Cancer Services, provides joyful experiences for children impacted by cancer, offering a variety of creative and recreational activities throughout the year.

Diaper Bank
No parent should have to choose between buying diapers and putting food on the table. Yet, one in two families struggles with diaper need, making it difficult for parents to access childcare, maintain employment, and provide their children with the essentials for a healthy start in life.
Since 2019, Junior League of Lafayette’s Diaper Bank has distributed more than half a million diapers to local families, ensuring infants and children have access to clean, dry diapers. Every quarter, the Diaper Bank Committee carefully packages and distributes diapers to nonprofit partners, ensuring that support reaches families when they need it most. Additionally, the Diaper Bank hosts diaper drives throughout the year, raising awareness and rallying the community to fight diaper need together.
Junior League of Lafayette is proud to be a member of the National Diaper Bank Network, working to combat diaper need in our community. If your organization is interested in becoming a Diaper Bank distribution partner, or if you’d like to host a diaper supply drive to support families in need, please contact us at jll@juniorleagueoflafayette.com.

EmpowHER.
For too many, the simple act of managing a period is a monthly struggle. Period poverty — the inability to afford essential menstrual products — impacts two in five women in the United States, forcing many to miss work, school, and daily activities simply because they don’t have access to the supplies they need. No one should have to choose between buying food, paying bills, or purchasing period products.
EmpowHER. helps break this cycle by providing menstrual supplies to individuals in need throughout our community by assembling and distributing monthly period supply kits to help individuals manage their periods with dignity.
Junior League of Lafayette is proud to be a member of the Alliance for Period Supplies, and we’re committed to ensuring that no individual in our community faces unnecessary barriers to health and opportunity due to lack of period products. If your organization is interested in becoming an EmpowHER. distribution partner, or if you want to host a period supply drive or donate financially, please contact us at jll@juniorleagueoflafayette.com.
Happy Wheels Hospitality Cart
A small act of kindness can make a world of difference. The Happy Wheels Hospitality Cart brings comfort and care to families facing some of life’s most difficult moments.
When a loved one is hospitalized, stepping away — even for a quick break — can feel impossible. That’s where Happy Wheels comes in. Our volunteers visit hospital rooms at Our Lady of Lourdes Women’s & Children’s Hospital, offering snacks, refreshments, activities, toiletries, and other essential items to patients and their families who cannot leave the bedside. This simple gesture not only meets immediate needs but also provides a sense of relief and support during stressful times.
Every bottle of water, pack of tissues, or coloring book handed out is more than just an item, it’s a reminder that these families are not alone. Junior League of Lafayette is honored to bring a moment of comfort and compassion through the Happy Wheels program.
SMILES
A cancer diagnosis changes everything for families. SMILES, in partnership with Miles Perret Cancer Services, provides a much-needed escape and a supportive environment for children ages 5-18 who are battling cancer or have a parent or sibling facing the disease.
SMILES begins each year with our Back-to-School Project, ensuring over 100 students receive the supplies they need to start the school year with confidence. But our support goes far beyond school supplies. Once a month, we create moments of joy, whether it’s painting, watching a movie, experiencing the magic of Christmas lights, exploring the zoo, or going to a basketball game. These outings provide more than just fun; they offer a sense of normalcy, laughter, and relief in the midst of difficult times.
For Junior League of Lafayette Members, the greatest reward is the smiles we see on the faces of these children and their families — smiles that reflect moments of happiness, friendship, and hope. Through SMILES, we are honored to bring light into their lives, one memory at a time.
